Claude SEO skills: what each one can and cannot do

Claude SEO skills at a glance

Claude SEO skills turn an SEO audit into instructions an agent can follow: crawlability, indexation, page speed, on-page elements, schema and content quality, ending in a ranked list of fixes. We have reviewed nine, and six get an install verdict. The other three carry caveats that you should read first.

The limit most skills share is data. An agent can read your pages and code, but it does not know search volumes or backlinks. Instructions-only skills such as seo-audit say so openly. Suites that add keyword or ranking data do it through optional paid services, which brings API keys and extra network calls into the picture.

The table below summarizes all nine reviewed skills. Depth is our score for how much usable guidance a skill contains, and security is the label from our review.

What to look for in Claude SEO skills

First decide whether you want checklists or live data. Checklists work offline and cost nothing. Live data needs accounts and keys, so check where those keys end up. For Claude SEO, the installers were not in our files, so we could not confirm how keys are written to your Claude settings.

Second, treat fetched pages as untrusted. A page you audit can contain text that tries to steer the agent. The seo-audit skill tells the agent to handle fetched content as data. The Claude Code docs give the same general warning for any connected server that fetches external content.

Third, look for uploads. One skill here publishes a report of your site to a vendor’s cloud by default. Fourth, check scope. A skill that handles audits will not do keyword research, and several verdicts say exactly that.

Our status labels are explained on the security page. Across the nine skills, one is clean, seven are marked “review” and one has broad access.

  • seo-audit is the clean pick. It is Markdown only: an 18 KB SKILL.md, seven reference files and 13 eval prompts, with no scripts or pre-approved tools. It has about 240,000 recorded installs. It is a checklist, not a crawler, and it has no keyword data.
  • Web Quality Skills is a set of six skills for performance, Core Web Vitals, accessibility, SEO and best practices, built around Lighthouse. One local shell script greps HTML and prints JSON. Live audits rely on Lighthouse or the Chrome DevTools MCP, which sit outside the repository.
  • Claude SEO has 26 SEO sub-skills and 19 agents and works without keys. Optional extensions add DataForSEO, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and others. It is built around Claude Code, so it does not suit other agents.
  • NotFair Plugin has 48 skills for SEO, AI search, ads and analytics. Live access runs through a hosted connector that can change ad accounts and WordPress after you approve each change. That convenience is also the reason to read its notes before connecting accounts.
  • squirrelscan wraps a website audit CLI with 300+ rules. It has a caveats verdict and broad access: a signed-in audit publishes an unlisted report to the vendor’s cloud unless you pass --no-publish or --offline.

The other four skills in this category

These suites cover SEO as one part of a wider marketing or website toolkit. They suit you if SEO is only some of your work.

Marketing Skills by Corey Haines is the parent collection of seo-audit. It has 52 skills for CRO, copywriting, SEO, analytics, paid ads and growth. The skills are built around a shared product-marketing context file, so set that up before you run them; otherwise each skill works with less information about your product. It gets an install verdict and a depth score of 4.

claude-blog comes from the same author as Claude SEO and handles the content side: writing, auditing and refreshing blog posts. It has 30 /blog commands, 5 agents, a five-gate delivery contract and a bundled Obsidian brain. Like Claude SEO, it is a Claude Code suite. Install verdict, depth 4.

RampStack Claude Skills is the broadest collection here: 107 stack-agnostic skills covering the website lifecycle, from brand and design through content, SEO, product, ops and growth, with 516 reference files. It has a caveats verdict, so read the review before installing.

Aaron Marketing Skills has 120 skills across seven disciplines: narrative, SEO/GEO, social, email, paid ads, influencer and launch. Output passes through scored auditor gates, and there is an optional 8-bot team mode. It also carries a caveats verdict.

Checklist skills vs live-data suites

The main split in this category is between skills that only give the agent instructions and suites that connect it to outside data.

Checklist skills, with seo-audit as the clearest example, cost nothing, need no accounts and send nothing beyond what the agent already fetches. The trade-off is that the agent works from what it can see on your pages and in your code. It can flag missing structured data, weak titles or indexation problems, but it cannot tell you how many people search for a term.

Live-data suites fill that gap. Claude SEO adds keyword and ranking data through optional extensions for DataForSEO, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and others. NotFair reaches GA4 and Search Console analytics, plus ad platforms and WordPress, through its hosted connector. Both need accounts, and NotFair can make changes once you approve them. Weigh that access against how much the data is worth to you.

Tool-based auditors sit in between. Web Quality Skills relies on Lighthouse or the Chrome DevTools MCP for live measurements, and squirrelscan runs its own CLI. Both give you measured results instead of a checklist, but you need the outside tool installed.

A technical SEO workflow with Claude Code

You can chain several of these Claude skills into one pass over a site. A sequence that stays within what the reviewed skills support:

  1. Run seo-audit against the site for crawlability, indexation, speed, on-page elements, content quality and international SEO. Keep its ranked action plan as your task list.
  2. For page speed and Core Web Vitals, add Web Quality Skills, with Lighthouse or the Chrome DevTools MCP installed separately.
  3. If you want a rule-based scan, run squirrelscan, fix the findings in code and re-audit. Pass --no-publish or --offline if you do not want a report on the vendor’s cloud.
  4. For schema markup and AI-search readiness, use Claude SEO’s sub-skills, which work without keys.
  5. Move to content with claude-blog to audit and refresh existing posts, or use Marketing Skills for copywriting and CRO.
  6. Add live data last, if at all, through Claude SEO’s extensions or NotFair’s Search Console connection.

Starting with the offline skills lets you see how much an audit finds before you connect any paid service.

Example prompts

These are plain requests that match what the skills describe. Adjust the site and pages to your project.

  • “Audit example.com for crawlability, indexation and on-page issues, and give me a ranked list of fixes.”
  • “Check the Core Web Vitals and accessibility of the pricing page and tell me what to change first.”
  • “Review the structured data on our product pages and list missing or broken schema.”
  • “Refresh this blog post and audit it against the original before publishing.”

If a prompt asks for search volumes or backlinks and you have no data extension set up, expect the agent to say it cannot provide them, or to guess. Check any numbers it gives against a real source.

Setup gotchas

Claude SEO and claude-blog are built for Claude Code. If you use a different agent, they are the wrong choice.

Web Quality Skills does not ship Lighthouse or the Chrome DevTools MCP. Without one of them, you get the instructions and the local HTML script, not live audits.

squirrelscan publishes by default when you are signed in. Make --no-publish or --offline a habit for client or staging sites.

For Claude SEO’s paid extensions, we could not confirm from our files how keys reach your Claude settings, so look at your settings after setup. With NotFair, decide which accounts the connector may touch before you approve any change.

What these skills do not replace

None of the nine skills gives an agent search volume or backlink data on its own. That still comes from a paid data service or from your own analytics. The checklist skills also do not crawl a site the way a dedicated crawler does; they direct the agent to read pages it can reach. If you work at an SEO agency or run SEO in-house, treat these skills as a way to speed up audits and fixes, not as a substitute for the data tools you already pay for.

Who should skip these skills

Skip the live-data suites if you cannot share API keys or account access with an agent; seo-audit covers most audit work without either. Skip squirrelscan if site reports must never leave your machine and you cannot rely on remembering the offline flags. Skip the large marketing collections (RampStack, Aaron Marketing Skills) if you only need SEO, since most of their skills cover other disciplines. If your main need is keyword research or a content brief built on search data, an audit-only skill will not get you there.

If your work is content rather than audits, the marketing and writing categories overlap with this one. The category page lists all nine skills with depth scores, and how we review explains the scoring.
