What Claude SEO does

Claude SEO is a Claude Code plugin that adds a /seo command family. /seo audit <url> fans out specialist agents across technical SEO, content quality and E-E-A-T, structured data, sitemaps, performance and visual checks, then returns a prioritized action plan; the README says a full audit takes 10 to 15 minutes. Other commands cover a single page, schema generation, hreflang, local and Maps SEO, e-commerce, programmatic pages, keyword clustering by SERP overlap, content briefs, backlinks, competitor pages, change monitoring (drift) and 'GEO', meaning readiness to be cited by Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. A newer agentic-readiness skill checks things like llms.txt and WebMCP.

The main skill is about 20 KB with 17 reference files, and the 35 SKILL.md files average roughly 11 KB. Nine optional extensions connect paid or keyed services: Ahrefs, DataForSEO, SE Ranking, Profound, Bing Webmaster, Matomo, Firecrawl, Unlighthouse and a Gemini-based image generator. The core runs without any keys; free Google APIs (PageSpeed, CrUX, Search Console, GA4) can be added through /seo google setup. The README cites a CI pipeline and over a thousand passing tests, and the plugin installs through a script or the Claude Code marketplace.

Good for

  • Running a structured technical and content SEO audit of one site from Claude Code
  • Checking AI-search (GEO) and schema readiness alongside classic SEO
  • SEO consultants who want parallel agents and optional Ahrefs or DataForSEO data in one workflow

Not for

  • Agents other than Claude Code (the plugin is built around its commands and agents)
  • Keyword research at scale without a paid data extension
  • Anyone who wants a short, single-purpose skill rather than a 35-skill suite

Dependencies and costs

  • Claude Code
  • Python for the plugin's helper scripts
  • Optional: Google API keys (PageSpeed, CrUX, Search Console, GA4)
  • Optional paid or keyed extensions: Ahrefs, DataForSEO, SE Ranking, Profound, Bing Webmaster, Matomo, Firecrawl, Gemini image generation
  • Telemetry: none found; the README states there is no tracking, and says audited pages and data go to Claude the same as any Claude Code work.

Security review

Review before installing

Markdown SEO audit skills backed by Python helpers and optional paid-service extensions (DataForSEO, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Profound, Matomo, Firecrawl and more). The helpers and installers are not in our files, so we could not check how API keys are written to your Claude settings or what the fetcher does. The README says URL fetching goes through an SSRF-guarded script and offers a clone-then-run install rather than a pipe to a shell.

Worth knowing

  • Makes network requestsPage fetching goes through a bundled SSRF-guarded fetcher, and optional Google APIs (PageSpeed, CrUX, Search Console, GA4), DataForSEO, Ahrefs, Moz/Bing, Firecrawl, SE Ranking, Profound and Matomo calls need keys; free map APIs (Overpass, Nominatim) are called in examples.README.md:286
  • Needs an API key for its own serviceExtension skills read their service key (PROFOUND_API_KEY, SERANKING_API_KEY, BING_WEBMASTER_API_KEY, Matomo token) from ~/.claude/settings.json env or ~/.config/claude-seo/*.json and use it only with that service.extensions/profound/skills/seo-profound/SKILL.md:20
  • Changes files outside your projectEach extension's install.sh/install.ps1 (not in our files) is described as writing API keys into ~/.claude/settings.json env and MCP server config, and Google setup writes under ~/.config/claude-seo.extensions/bing-webmaster/skills/seo-bing/SKILL.md:18
  • Installs packages or toolsExtension installers set up pinned MCP packages (@ahrefs/mcp@0.0.11, dataforseo-mcp-server@2.8.10) and Firecrawl, banana and unlighthouse tooling.extensions/ahrefs/skills/seo-ahrefs/SKILL.md:6
  • Relies on a CLI or package we could not reviewDepends on the unlighthouse npm package, npx lighthouse (skills/seo-agentic/SKILL.md line 186) and third-party MCP servers whose code is not in the repo.extensions/unlighthouse/skills/seo-unlighthouse/SKILL.md:6

What we checked

The repository (467 files) on Oct 29, 2026. Not a full review: 281 of 467 files were not downloaded (large repository; we reviewed the skill folders); it relies on code outside the repository: scripts/claude-seo and the Python helpers (fetch_page.py, google_auth.py, etc.), root install.sh/install.ps1 and every extensions/*/install.sh (281 of 467 files not downloaded); npm MCP packages @ahrefs/mcp, dataforseo-mcp-server, Firecrawl MCP, unlighthouse; plugin manifests and any hooks (.claude-plugin/*).

NVIDIA SkillSpector static scan: 45 pattern hits (Data Exfiltration 12, Agent Snooping 6, Excessive Agency 6, System Prompt Leakage 5, Privilege Escalation 5, Prompt Injection 3). The 45 hits are documentation: extension skills that check ~/.claude/settings.json for an env key before calling a service, HTML comments used as cluster-link markers, an unpinned npx lighthouse example, sudo apt commands for ImageMagick/exiftool, and a statement that TLS is always verified (the verify=False match is in that statement). No allowed-tools frontmatter was found.

A review, not a certification. Skills change after we check them — read the files before installing.

Can it run unattended?

Not really. Audits are interactive runs of 10 to 15 minutes that end in a report; the suite has no loop, resumable state or stop condition for multi-hour unattended work.
