Claude PowerPoint skill and other document skills

The Claude PowerPoint skill is Anthropic’s pptx skill, and it sits in a small group of document skills that let an agent create, edit and check Office files instead of describing them. We reviewed 13 skills in this category: 9 get an install verdict and 4 come with caveats. Only one is clean, and the reason is practical: real document work needs scripts and system tools.

Anthropic’s help center says Claude includes built-in skills for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF tasks in the Claude app, and that skills there need code execution and file creation enabled (official article). The same document skills are published in the repository we list below, which is what you install for Claude Code.

How to use the Claude PowerPoint skill

Where you work decides the setup, so the steps differ between the Claude app and Claude Code.

In the Claude app:

  1. Turn on code execution and file creation. Anthropic’s article lists both as requirements for skills.
  2. Ask for a presentation in plain language. The built-in PowerPoint skill covers the task, so you do not install anything.
  3. Download the .pptx file and open it in PowerPoint or another Office app to confirm it looks right.

In Claude Code:

  1. Install the pptx skill from the Anthropic skills repository.
  2. Install the system tools it expects. Our review lists LibreOffice, pandoc and Poppler for the Office skills, plus Node or Python packages. Without them the scripts fail.
  3. Ask the agent to build or edit a deck. For a new file it uses pptxgenjs. For an existing file it edits the underlying XML.
  4. Let it run the validators and render the deck with LibreOffice before it hands the file back. That check is the main reason to use a pptx skill instead of asking a model to write slide code from scratch.

If your sandbox blocks Unix sockets, expect the skill to compile and preload a small C shim so LibreOffice can run. That is documented behavior, but it is worth knowing about before it shows up in a log.

What to look for in a Claude PowerPoint skill or document skill

Format first. Does the skill produce real .pptx and .docx files that colleagues open in Office, or an HTML deck that you present in a browser? Both are legitimate, but they are different jobs.

Then dependencies. Office skills usually need LibreOffice, pandoc or Poppler on your machine, plus Node or Python packages. If you cannot install those, the skill will not run. Look for validators too: tools that check the output file catch the broken decks an agent would otherwise hand you.

Read the licenses. Anthropic’s document skills are proprietary: you can use them, but you cannot redistribute them. On security, 12 of the 13 skills are marked “review” and 1 is clean, mostly because they run local scripts or rely on tools we could not review. See the security page for the labels.

  • pptx creates, edits and checks PowerPoint files with pptxgenjs, XML editing, validators and LibreOffice rendering. It has a 21 KB SKILL.md and about 15 Python scripts. It makes no network calls. In sandboxes that block Unix sockets it temporarily compiles and preloads a small C shim for LibreOffice. The license is proprietary.
  • docx handles Word documents, including tracked changes and comments, with XML validators. Same dependencies (LibreOffice, pandoc, Poppler) and the same shim, same proprietary license.
  • Frontend Slides builds animated single file HTML decks and can convert from a PowerPoint after showing three style previews. It ships about 68 templates. Sharing is a separate step you ask for: its deploy script publishes the deck to a public Vercel URL with your login. It is a poor fit for decks that colleagues must edit as .pptx.
  • diagram-design writes 45 diagram types as one self contained HTML and SVG file, with a 31 KB SKILL.md and about 63 reference files. Generated pages reference Google Fonts, and PNG export needs Playwright. The helper scripts were not in our snapshot.
  • brand-guidelines is clean but very small: it applies Anthropic’s own colors and Poppins and Lora fonts to documents and slides. Useful as a pattern for your own brand skill, less so as a tool.

The parent Anthropic skills repository holds 20 skills, including xlsx and pdf, but we review pptx, docx and brand-guidelines as separate pages. It also contains frontend-design, skill-creator and mcp-builder. It carries a “review” status because of its scripts and dependencies, such as a global pnpm install in the artifact builder.

Other skills in this category

The rest of the category covers diagrams, knowledge maps and domain documents more than slides. These skills can supply content for a deck, but most of them do not produce PowerPoint files.

  • Mermaid Architect (design-doc-mermaid) is a Mermaid diagram and design doc skill with a 23 KB router, 11 document templates, guides, and scripts that validate and render diagrams with mermaid-cli. It gets a caveats verdict.
  • Azure Resource Visualizer is a Microsoft skill that inspects an Azure resource group and writes a Mermaid architecture diagram showing how the resources connect. It is narrow but does one job.
  • Anatomy builds interactive isometric SVG, WebGL and 3D figures that explain a technical idea as a working physical object, then checks its own output.
  • Understand Anything is a 9 skill plugin that maps a codebase, docs or wiki into an interactive knowledge graph with a dashboard, guided tours and Q&A.
  • Claude for Financial Services is Anthropic’s set of reference agents, skills and data connectors for banking, research, fund admin and KYC, usable as Claude plugins or Managed Agents. It gets a caveats verdict.
  • slideshow (HyperFrames) builds a navigable HyperFrames slide deck with fragment reveals, branching hotspots and presenter notes. The deck is served live rather than rendered to MP4. It also gets a caveats verdict.
  • lark-doc reads, creates and edits Lark and Feishu cloud documents and wiki pages through lark-cli, including images, attachments, mind notes and whiteboards. It only helps if you use that suite.

pptx skill vs Frontend Slides vs HyperFrames slideshow

All three make presentations, but each produces a different kind of file.

The pptx skill is the one to pick when the file has to stay a PowerPoint file. Colleagues can open it, change a chart and send it on. Validators and LibreOffice rendering give the agent a way to check its work. The cost is the system dependencies and a proprietary license.

Frontend Slides makes an animated HTML deck in one file. You get a choice of three style previews and about 68 templates, and it can start from an existing PowerPoint. The result runs in a browser, so it suits talks you give yourself. If you ask it to share the deck, the deploy script publishes it to a public Vercel URL under your login, so check the content before you run that step.

The HyperFrames slideshow skill targets interactive presenting: fragment reveals, branching hotspots and presenter notes, served live. It is the furthest from an editable Office file.

For diagrams inside any of these, diagram-design and Mermaid Architect generate the visuals separately, and you place them on the slides.

Example prompts

These show the kind of request each skill is built for. Adjust them to your files.

  • With pptx: “Create a 10 slide .pptx from this outline, then validate the file and render it so you can check for overflowing text.”
  • With pptx: “Open quarterly.pptx, replace the figures on slides 3 and 4 with the numbers below, and keep the existing layout.”
  • With docx: “Review this contract in Word and add your suggestions as tracked changes and comments instead of rewriting the text.”
  • With Frontend Slides: “Convert this PowerPoint into an HTML deck. Show me the three style previews first.”
  • With diagram-design: “Draw our request flow as a sequence diagram in a single HTML file using our brand colors.”
  • With Azure Resource Visualizer: “Inspect this resource group and write a Mermaid diagram of how the resources connect.”

Who should skip these skills

Skip the Anthropic Office skills if you cannot install LibreOffice, pandoc or Poppler where the agent runs, or if you need to redistribute the skill files, since the license does not allow it. In the Claude app, if your workspace keeps code execution or file creation turned off, the built-in skills will not work.

Skip Frontend Slides and the HyperFrames slideshow if your team edits decks in PowerPoint. Skip lark-doc unless you already use Lark or Feishu. And treat brand-guidelines as a template for writing your own brand skill, because it only knows Anthropic’s colors and fonts.
