shadcn/ui skills Claude skills

The official skills inside the shadcn/ui repo: a shadcn skill for adding, fixing and styling components, plus a Radix-to-Base-UI migration skill.

Our verdict Recommended

Official, MIT-licensed skills with concrete rules, reference files and evals; useful if you use shadcn/ui and irrelevant if you don't.

What shadcn/ui skills does

The shadcn/ui repository is the component library itself, with a skills folder holding two agent skills. The shadcn skill is set to load automatically (the user cannot invoke it directly) whenever a project has a components.json or the task mentions shadcn, presets or component registries. When it loads it runs npx shadcn@latest info --json to read the project's style, Tailwind version, aliases and installed components, then tells the agent to search registries before writing custom UI, compose existing components, prefer built-in variants and use semantic color tokens.

Its rules live in a rules folder with incorrect/correct code pairs. Examples are using flex with gap instead of space-x or space-y, size-10 instead of w-10 h-10, and never overriding component colors from className. Companion files cover the CLI, customization, design systems, the MCP server and registries. The skill's allowed tools are limited to the shadcn CLI through npx, pnpm dlx or bunx, and it includes an evals.json, a small showcase-coverage script and sample assets.

The second skill, migrate-radix-to-base, converts shadcn wrappers and hand-built Radix compositions to Base UI one component at a time. It requires a clean git tree and a branch, runs a type-check baseline first, commits per component and ships nine mapping files for props, overlays, menus and forms. The two skills together average about 15 KB.

Good for

  • Projects built on shadcn/ui with a components.json
  • Teams who want agents to follow shadcn composition and Tailwind rules
  • Anyone migrating a shadcn project from Radix to Base UI

Not for

  • Projects that do not use shadcn/ui
  • Design exploration; these skills enforce implementation conventions, not visual direction

What's inside depth 4/5

Two skills averaging about 15 KB, with a rules folder, nine migration reference files, an evals.json and a small script, though the repo contains few evals overall.

Security review

Review before installing

Markdown skills (shadcn and a Radix-to-Base migration guide) that drive the shadcn CLI to add, search and update UI components in your project. The frontmatter pre-approves wildcard npx shadcn@latest * commands, which download the latest CLI and can pull component code from registries or URLs you name and write it into your project. The single script is a local reporting helper; the CLI itself and most of the repo were not reviewable.

Worth knowing

  • Runs remote code at an unpinned versionThe skill requires running the CLI as npx shadcn@latest (or pnpm dlx / bunx), i.e. the newest npm release each time.skills/shadcn/SKILL.md:10
  • Relies on a CLI or package we could not reviewAll actions go through the shadcn CLI and optional shadcn MCP server, whose source is not in the files we hold.skills/shadcn/SKILL.md:10
  • Makes network requestsThe CLI fetches component source from ui.shadcn.com, third-party registries, public GitHub registries and arbitrary URLs, and writes the files into your project (the docs show --dry-run/--view to inspect first).skills/shadcn/cli.md:107
  • Installs packages or toolsshadcn init/add installs npm dependencies and can overwrite existing config and component files (--overwrite).skills/shadcn/cli.md:34

What we checked

The repository (6411 files) on Oct 29, 2026. Not a full review: 6189 of 6411 files were not downloaded (large repository; we reviewed the skill folders); it contains compiled binaries or archives we cannot read; it relies on code outside the repository: shadcn CLI (npm package `shadcn`, run as @latest) and the shadcn MCP server; About 6,190 repo files (the CLI and apps/ source, registry, tests, .claude and .github folders and the template tarballs) are not in our copy; only the skills/ folder was available. 10 binary files (template .tar.gz archives) cannot be read..

NVIDIA SkillSpector static scan: 133 pattern hits (MCP Rug Pull 123, Excessive Agency 4, Rogue Agent 2, Memory Poisoning 1, Agent Snooping 1, Output Handling 1). About 120 of the 133 hits are mentions of unpinned npx shadcn@latest which the skill uses by design. The rest are CLI flag tables (--overwrite), a '~/.codex/config.toml' MCP setup note, an npoint.io example URL for registry items and a dangerouslySetInnerHTML line in a chat UI rules example.

Can it run unattended?

Not really. The migration skill works through components with commits and checks, but it is built for supervised project work, not unattended multi-hour runs.

FAQ

What is the shadcn skill?

It is the official agent skill from the shadcn/ui repo. It loads in projects with a components.json and guides the agent to use the shadcn CLI, existing components, semantic colors and the library's styling rules.

How do I install the shadcn skill?

Install it with the skills CLI from the shadcn-ui/ui repository, for example npx skills add shadcn-ui/ui. It needs a project that uses shadcn/ui so that npx shadcn@latest info works.

Is the shadcn skill safe?

It is markdown plus one local helper script. It runs the shadcn CLI via npx when it loads, so you are trusting the latest shadcn package on npm. The migration skill edits many files, so work on a branch.

shadcn skill vs ui-ux-pro-max: which should I use?

The shadcn skill enforces how to use one specific component library correctly. ui-ux-pro-max is a general design-intelligence skill with styles, palettes and layout guidance, so it is for deciding how the interface should look.
