design-taste-frontend skill

The Taste Skill v2 design skill: researched art directions, open-licensed photos and a headless-browser look-and-fix loop for web pages and app screens.

Our verdict Recommended

A deep, MIT-licensed design skill with working scripts and evals; plan for the time and token cost of a full build.

What the design-taste-frontend skill does

design-taste-frontend (the skill folder in the repo is named taste-skill) gives a coding agent a process for building sites and app screens that do not look like the average of every landing page it has seen. The agent picks a researched direction from a JSON library (directions, palettes, type pairings, hero and section blueprints, motion patterns and app-screen patterns), writes down a specific idea for the page, builds under a strict house style, and then checks its own screenshots. The SKILL.md is about 39 KB and points to eleven references covering colour, layout, type, copy, motion, imagery, critique, scenes and a list of 'tells' that make a page look machine-made.

The skill ships Node scripts. A lint script and an inspector drive an installed Chrome, Edge or Chromium headless over the DevTools protocol so the agent can capture the page at several widths and fix problems. An assets script searches public-domain and Creative Commons collections (Openverse, Wikimedia Commons, the Met, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Internet Archive, NASA) and records credits for what it downloads. An evals.json holds ten prompts for comparing an agent with and without the skill. It needs Node 22 or newer and no API keys; the README says a build takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes and a few hundred thousand tokens. This is the main skill of the Leonxlnx/taste-skill repository.

Good for

  • Building landing pages, portfolios and product pages that should look art-directed
  • Agents that can run Node and a local Chrome to inspect their own output
  • Replacing placeholder images with credited open-licensed photography

Not for

  • Small component changes where a 30 to 45 minute build is too much
  • Environments without Node 22 or Chromium
  • Work that must follow an existing design system's tokens

Depth 4/5

A 39 KB SKILL.md, eleven reference files, eight JSON libraries, seven Node scripts and ten eval prompts, but the evals are manual comparisons rather than automated tests.

Dependencies and costs

  • Node.js 22 or newer
  • Chrome, Edge or Chromium installed locally
  • Internet access for the image search script

Security review

Review before installing

The skill folder of the taste-skill repository: art-direction instructions, a research library, and dependency-free Node scripts for a headless-Chrome inspector, design sheets and an open-licence image downloader. The scripts use a temporary browser profile and a localhost-only server, fetch from public museum and archive APIs without keys, and write a history file under ~/.taste-skill. SKILL.md sets no allowed-tools.

Worth knowing

  • Makes network requestsassets.mjs searches and downloads openly licensed pictures and video from Openverse, Wikimedia Commons, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Met, Internet Archive and NASA (no API keys) into the project and records credits; the inspector can also load any http(s) URL you give it.skills/taste-skill/scripts/assets.mjs:29
  • Changes files outside your projectdraw.mjs and app-draw.mjs keep a history file at ~/.taste-skill/history.json (overridable with TASTE_SKILL_HISTORY), outside the project, to avoid repeating design directions.skills/taste-skill/scripts/draw.mjs:111

What we checked

The skill folder (39 files) on Oct 29, 2026. Not a full review: we read 2 of 13 code files; it relies on code outside the repository: Chrome/Edge/Brave browser used by the inspector; assets.mjs, draw.mjs, inspect.mjs, scenes.mjs, lint.mjs, probe.mjs, rules.mjs, app-draw.mjs and the asset JS files were searched for process, network, environment and file-deletion calls but not read in full.

NVIDIA SkillSpector static scan: 78 pattern hits (Data Exfiltration 52, analysis-evasion 22, Tool Misuse 3, MCP Least Privilege 1). The SkillSpector hits are 'incomplete referenced artifact analysis' notes saying the scanner only partly analysed the larger scripts named in SKILL.md (draw.mjs, inspect.mjs and similar), plus font, museum and image-API URLs in the library JSON and assets.mjs; none is a finding about behaviour.

A review, not a certification. Skills change after we check them — read the files before installing.

MIT — commercial use allowed. Downloaded images carry their own licenses (public domain, CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA only) and credits are recorded.

Can it run unattended?

Not really. It runs a look-and-fix loop within a single build of 30 to 45 minutes around a user brief; it is not designed for multi-hour unattended runs.

FAQ

What is design-taste-frontend?

It is the skill inside Taste Skill (v2) that gives coding agents an art direction, open-licensed pictures and a browser-based check loop so websites and app screens look less generic. The folder in the repo is named taste-skill.

How do I install design-taste-frontend?

Run npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill --skill "design-taste-frontend". Claude Code and Codex plugin marketplaces are also supported according to the README.

What does design-taste-frontend need to run?

Node 22 or newer and an installed Chrome, Edge or Chromium. The README says it installs nothing, needs no API keys and uses the internet only to find pictures.

design-taste-frontend vs frontend-design: what is the difference?

Anthropic's frontend-design plugin skill is a single guidance file of about 9 KB for distinctive visual design. design-taste-frontend is much larger, with a design library, scripts for linting and screenshots, and a picture search step.
