Taste Skill Claude skill

An anti-generic-design skill that gives the agent an art direction, open-licensed photos and a headless-browser check loop for web pages and app screens.

Our verdict Recommended

A deep, MIT-licensed design skill with working scripts and evals; budget real time and tokens per page.

What Taste Skill does

Taste Skill (v2) targets the 'average landing page' look that coding agents produce. Its one skill, design-taste-frontend, has the agent pick a researched design direction from a JSON library (directions, palettes, type pairings, hero and section blueprints, motion, app-screen patterns), write a specific idea for the page, and build it under a strict house style. The SKILL.md is about 39 KB and points to eleven reference files on colour, layout, type, copy, motion, imagery, critique and a list of 'tells' that make a page look machine-made. The README says the library comes from a study of 247 gallery sites.

Scripts do the checking. A lint script and an inspector drive a locally installed Chrome, Edge or Chromium headless over the DevTools protocol, so the agent can screenshot at several widths and fix what it sees. An assets script searches Openverse, Wikimedia Commons, the Met, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Internet Archive and NASA for public-domain, CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA pictures, downloads them and records credits. A ten-prompt evals.json is meant for comparing an agent with and without the skill. The README says a full build takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes and a few hundred thousand tokens, needs Node 22 or newer, and uses no API keys.

Good for

  • Landing pages, portfolios and product pages that should not look templated
  • Agents that can run Node and a local Chrome to check their own screenshots
  • Teams who want credited, open-licensed photography instead of placeholders

Not for

  • Quick component tweaks where a 30 to 45 minute build is overkill
  • Environments without Node 22 or a Chromium-based browser
  • Strict design-system work where a house style must come from your own tokens

What's inside depth 4/5

A 39 KB SKILL.md, eleven reference files, eight JSON libraries, seven Node scripts (lint, inspect, assets, draw, scenes) and ten eval prompts, but the evals are manual comparisons, not an automated test suite.

Security review

Review before installing

A frontend art-direction skill with a research library of site directions and a set of dependency-free Node scripts: a headless-Chrome inspector, a design-sheet generator, and a downloader for openly licensed images. The scripts use a temporary browser profile and a localhost-only server, fetch from public museum and archive APIs without keys, and keep a history file under ~/.taste-skill. install.sh only creates symlinks in your agent skills folder. SKILL.md sets no allowed-tools.

Worth knowing

  • Changes files outside your projectinstall.sh symlinks each skill folder into ~/.claude/skills (or ~/.codex/skills with --codex/--all-agents); it only creates or removes symlinks that point into this repo and downloads nothing.install.sh:90
  • Makes network requestsassets.mjs searches and downloads openly licensed pictures and video from Openverse, Wikimedia Commons, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Met, Internet Archive and NASA (no API keys) into the project and records credits; the inspector can also load any http(s) URL you give it.skills/taste-skill/scripts/assets.mjs:29
  • Changes files outside your projectdraw.mjs and app-draw.mjs keep a history file at ~/.taste-skill/history.json (overridable with TASTE_SKILL_HISTORY), outside the project, to avoid repeating design directions.skills/taste-skill/scripts/draw.mjs:111

What we checked

The repository (72 files) on Oct 29, 2026. Not a full review: we read 6 of 21 code files; it relies on code outside the repository: Chrome/Edge/Brave browser used by the inspector; assets.mjs, draw.mjs, inspect.mjs, scenes.mjs, lint.mjs, probe.mjs, rules.mjs, app-draw.mjs and the asset JS files were searched for process, network, environment and file-deletion calls but not read in full.

NVIDIA SkillSpector static scan: 69 pattern hits (Data Exfiltration 55, Privilege Escalation 5, MCP Rug Pull 5, Tool Misuse 3, Excessive Agency 1). The 69 SkillSpector hits are mostly 'external transmission' notes on font, museum and image-API URLs in the library JSON and assets.mjs, the words 'curl', 'keychain' and 'keyring' inside photo captions and site descriptions, a README star-history badge link, an unpinned npx skills line in the changelog, and the --no-check flag of assets.mjs (skips an image-loads check).

A review, not a certification. Skills change after we check them — read the files before installing.

License

MIT — commercial use allowed. Downloaded images carry their own licenses; the skill offers only public-domain, CC0, CC BY and CC BY-SA files and records credits.

Can it run unattended?

Not really. It runs a look-and-fix loop with screenshots in a single build of 30 to 45 minutes, but it is built around a user brief and review rather than multi-hour unattended runs.

FAQ

What is Taste Skill?

Taste Skill is an open-source agent skill, design-taste-frontend, that gives coding agents an art direction, open-licensed pictures and a headless-browser inspection loop so websites and app screens look less generic. It was created by Leonxlnx and installs through the skills CLI or as a Claude Code or Codex plugin.

How do I install Taste Skill?

Run npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill --skill "design-taste-frontend". In Claude Code you can instead run /plugin marketplace add Leonxlnx/taste-skill and /plugin install taste-skill@taste-skill; Codex has a matching plugin command in the README.

Does Taste Skill need API keys?

No. The README says it uses no API keys and installs nothing. It needs Node 22 or newer, a local Chrome, Edge or Chromium, and network access to fetch pictures.

Taste Skill vs Impeccable: which should I use?

Taste Skill pushes an agent toward a researched art direction with real photos and a screenshot check loop. Impeccable is a set of design commands (polish, bolder, critique, audit) you apply to existing UI. Pick Taste Skill for new pages and Impeccable for refining what you have.
