Azure AI (Azure Skills) skill

Short Microsoft skill that maps Azure AI Search, Speech, OpenAI and Document Intelligence tasks to Azure MCP tools, plus condensed SDK notes.

Our verdict Recommended with caveats

Official but thin: mostly a tool-routing table and condensed SDK snippets, so the value depends on having the Azure MCP server enabled.

What the azure-ai skill does

The azure-ai skill is a routing sheet for four Azure AI services: AI Search, Speech, OpenAI and Document Intelligence. Its SKILL.md is about 3 KB and contains a table of which MCP tool or az command to use for each service, the Azure MCP commands for listing and querying search indexes and for speech transcription and synthesis, and short feature tables for search (full-text, vector, hybrid, enrichment) and speech (real-time and batch transcription, neural voices, diarization, custom models). If Azure MCP is not enabled it tells the agent to ask the user to enable it through /mcp. The useful bulk is a references/sdk folder with 15 condensed SDK guides: AI Search in Python, TypeScript and .NET, OpenAI for .NET, vision image analysis, transcription, translation, Document Intelligence and Content Safety in several languages, plus an auth best-practices note. Anything deeper links out to Microsoft Learn rather than being included.

Good for

  • Querying Azure AI Search indexes or running Speech transcription from an agent
  • Looking up a quick SDK pattern for Azure Search, Vision, Translation or Content Safety

Not for

  • Deep Azure OpenAI or Foundry model work (see microsoft-foundry)
  • Anyone who already has the Azure MCP server and knows these SDKs

Depth 2/5

A 3 KB SKILL.md and 15 short SDK reference files, no scripts or evals.

Dependencies and costs

  • Azure account or subscription
  • Azure CLI signed in with az login
  • Azure MCP Server (installed with the plugin; needs Node.js 18+ for npx)
  • Provisioned Azure AI Search, Speech or related resources
  • Telemetry: The skill files contain no telemetry code. The Azure MCP Server that the plugin wires in has its own telemetry; the repo README says to disable it with AZURE_MCP_COLLECT_TELEMETRY=false.

Security review

Review before installing

Documentation-only skill (16 files) for Azure AI Search, Speech, OpenAI and Document Intelligence. It has no scripts and recommends managed identity over keys; running it means using the Azure MCP tools, the Azure CLI and SDK installs against your subscription.

Worth knowing

  • Relies on a CLI or package we could not reviewRoutes work through Azure MCP tools and the Azure CLI for Search, Speech, OpenAI and Document Intelligence..github/plugins/azure-skills/skills/azure-ai/SKILL.md:14

What we checked

The skill folder (16 files) on Oct 29, 2026. Not a full review: it relies on code outside the repository: Azure MCP Server, started by the plugin through npx; its configuration sits outside this skill folder; Azure SDK packages named in the reference docs (pip and npm).

NVIDIA SkillSpector static scan: 0 pattern hits. No SkillSpector hits. The credential matches are passwordless-auth guidance (DefaultAzureCredential, Key Vault) in auth-best-practices.md.

A review, not a certification. Skills change after we check them — read the files before installing.

License

MIT (declared in the SKILL.md frontmatter); the repo is a mirror synced from microsoft/GitHub-Copilot-for-Azure and has no top-level LICENSE file in our copy. Commercial use allowed under MIT.

Can it run unattended?

Not really. It is a lookup and routing skill for interactive questions, with no loops or stop conditions.

FAQ

What does the Azure AI skill do?

It tells an agent which Azure MCP tools and CLI commands to use for AI Search, Speech, OpenAI and Document Intelligence, and ships condensed SDK guides for search, vision, translation, transcription and content safety.

How do I install the azure-ai skill?

It comes with Microsoft's Azure plugin: /plugin install azure@claude-plugins-official in Claude Code, or codex plugin marketplace add microsoft/azure-skills in Codex. Azure MCP must be enabled for the tool commands to work.

Is the azure-ai skill safe?

It is markdown only with no scripts. It lists MCP commands for querying search indexes and speech, and it uses your existing az login, so access is limited to what your Azure account can already do.

azure-ai vs microsoft-foundry?

azure-ai covers classic Azure AI services such as Search and Speech. microsoft-foundry covers Foundry agents, model deployment, evals and fine-tuning.
